"A remarkable hunt in Mozambique"
Hunting Mozambique with MAHIMBA SAFARIS from 9th Oct. to 21st Oct. 2024
We both hunted Cape buffalo and plainsgame at Mahimba Safaris with two of their extraordinary PHs and experienced the safari of a lifetime.
After a flight from Vienna with a stop-over in Addis Ababa, we arrived in Beira and took the short charter flight into camp. We found ourselves in an incredibly interesting landscape in a perfect camp with great service and a friendly camp team. The northern Zambezi Delta is an impressive part of Mozambique with special fauna and flora.
We both wanted to hunt an old Cape buffalo bull and we made a perfect choice at Mahimba for this ambition. We had been looking at videos from other hunts in this region and saw clients standing neck-deep in the swamps. At Mahimba it is not necessary to think of such a similar event. In October you have perfectly dry conditions here.
We hunted with excellent PHs and enthusiastic trackers, who tracked the buffaloes perfectly and we were both highly successful as we were rewarded with two great old buffalo Bulls. Gertraud‘s buffalo was old, with over 42 inches of spread and worn down horn tips, and mine with a big hard boss - horns going down deep with tips also worn down - a typical old grumpy dagga boy. We saw big herds with more than 200 buffaloes and were able to look at a lot of different animals to make a decision as to which was the best to shoot. Here our PHs were outstanding in spotting the best bulls in the herd.
When hunting we also caught sight of reedbock, Chobe bushbock, the black Roosevelt sable, many huge waterbucks and also elephant, warthog, bushpig and an enormous number of beautiful birds.
Gertraud was able to hunt an exceptionally big Chobe bushbuck while stalking along a riverbed with much fresh grass. Having finished my buffalo hunt, I shot an old waterbuck out of a large group after an exhausting stalk. It was difficult to get the male in the open for a shot in such thick bush with many females around him, but eventually I succeeded.
Camp life was wonderful, not intolerably hot, with the best lodging, perfect service, great kitchen, fine drinks and even ice for the gin & tonic was available. From the camp you have a great view over a river bed with fresh grass and many feeding animals in the morning and evening. We had beers after the hunt around the campfire - relaxing and talking about the great day we had with our friends. As we had a bit of extra time, we made a trip to the nearby Indian Ocean with a great experience in this amazing part of the country. We had a wonderful day at the beach whilst grilling fresh fish under the many coconut palms and Australian pine trees which have lined the coast since colonial days.
Our PH Kyne Edwards also took us on a boat trip along the Rio Mucarau which forms a border of the concession, showing us the many massive crocodiles and hippos lying in the sun along the riverbanks. The staff are committed to anti-poaching, which is the best thing to do for the wildlife in the area and they are very dedicated, doing this day and night.
At the end of 10 days of hunting, which unfortunately finished too fast, we had to pack our luggage and say goodbye to our great PHs and the Mahimba camp staff, thanking them for their sincere friendship and a great hunt that we were able to experience.
Many thanks to you all.

"Everything you could want..."
True African wilderness experiences are rare, but found in Mahimba. Animals have remained untouched for generations. Simple luxury provides an unforgettable camp experience. Samuel and Miguel are culinary experts, turning what you bring from the field into gourmet dining. The camp looks to the west and provides unforgettable sunsets. The river is flush with a variety of jungle birds who perch long enough for great photos. Crocs in the 8-10 foot range barely raise an eye with so many sunning themselves on the banks. The bigger boys, 14 foot class are what slow down the boat. But the buffalo hunting is the draw at Mahimba. Old bulls, broken horn bulls, and dangerous bulls. Everything you could want in hunting buffalo is at Mahimba.

"The best safari experience I have ever had."
After a lifetime of hunting across the continent of Africa, my hunting trip in Mozambique with Mahimba Safaris was truly the best safari experience I have ever had. Beautiful accommodation, amazing food, and most importantly, an incredible team of hard workers and ethical hunters.
Crocodile hunting on the Macarau River is an incredible experience, and I was fortunate enough to take a monster 14ft croc which also happened to be the oldest crocodile I have ever seen.
Then, I was able to take my first Cape buffalo after years of sitting on the sideline on other buffalo hunts. It was the bull of my dreams - the epitome of an old dagga boy and exactly what you hope for on a buffalo hunt in Mozambique.
To make things better, I had the privilege of being with my good friend as he took a huge crocodile and buffalo as well.
After we finished with dangerous game, we moved on to plainsgame and both shot beautiful reedbuck rams, and I was lucky to shoot an amazing bushpig boar as well.
A massive thank you to Mahimba Safaris and the Huntersinc.com team for making the safari of my dreams possible. I can’t wait to return to Mahimba soon.
