Plainsgame Hunting in Mozambique

Plainsgame Hunting in Mozambique

The Zambezia province of Mozambique is home to a beautiful and diverse array of huntable plainsgame species. Although buffalo and crocodile are our biggest attractions at Mahimba, plainsgame hunting is not to be overlooked and often makes up a large portion of a safari after a buffalo or crocodile is in the salt.

Our key plainsgame species at Mahima are:

  • Chobe Bushbuck
  • Common Reedbuck
  • Common Waterbuck
  • Roosevelt's Sable
  • Bushpig
  • Warthog
Trophy Chobe Bushbuck in Mozambique

Chobe Bushbuck

Mozambique is home to the Chobe bushbuck, one of the many subspecies of bushbuck throughout Africa. Our Mahimba area, in particular, is known for having some of the best-quality Chobe bushbuck genetics in all of Southern Africa. These abnormal genetics, rich natural resources, and soft-bark trees that prevent horn tip wear are the perfect recipe for growing monster bushbuck.

The average trophy size for Chobe bushbuck in most places is 12-15 inches, including the Niassa province of Northern Mozambique. However, at Mahimba, our average Chobe bushbuck ram is over 16 inches, with a high possibility of finding a true giant. During the 2024 season, our largest ram measured a whopping 18 6/8 inches.

If you are looking to hunt the Chobe bushbuck of your dreams, there is arguably no better place to do it than Mahimba, Mozambique.

Common/Southern Reedbuck Hunting

Common Reedbuck

The common reedbuck, also known as the southern reedbuck, is widespread across Southern Africa and parts of East Africa and is the most prominent plainsgame species at Mahimba. Although they can be found in numerous countries, they only inhabit specific types of habitat with plentiful water and open grasslands, making it still a somewhat rare plainsgame species to collect even for experienced African hunters.

Reedbuck are most active at night and spend the majority of the day lying down in the long grass or palm thickets, but early in the morning and late in the evening, they can often be found feeding in our many open "pans" at Mahimba. These small antelopes are a fun challenge to hunt!

Common Waterbuck Hunting in Mozambique

Common Waterbuck

The common waterbuck is a prominent species across much of Africa, but hunting them in their "proper" habitat in the riverine thickets and plains at Mahimba is the best way to hunt these beautiful creatures. Waterbuck bulls typically weigh over 500 pounds and carry a beautiful set of frontward-curving horns. Waterbuck are plentiful at Mahimba and a must-hunt on your safari in Mozambique.

Roosevelt's Sable Hunting in the Zambezi Delta

Roosevelt's Sable

Mozambique is widely known for Roosevelt sable hunting. This sable subspecies can only be hunted in Mozambique and Tanzania, and our hunting area is home to one of the southernmost populations. Although the Roosevelt sable in the Niassa region of Mozambique typically have longer horns, hunting them in the palm thickets of the Northern Zambezi Delta at Mahimba is a truly unique experience, and the slightly straighter horns (on average) make for a distinct trophy.

Bushpig Hunting in Mozambique

Bushpig

Bushpig hunting is one of the most exciting experiences at Mahimba. These pigs are primarily nocturnal and known to be shy ghosts of the night, often referred to as "the poor man's leopard hunt". Our area of Mozambique is home to an incredibly dense population of bushpigs and it is one of the best places to hunt these rare and elusive animals.

Warthog Hunting in Mozambique

Warthog

Almost every hunter who visits Africa wants to hunt a warthog, whether it be their first or their tenth safari. Mahimba has plenty of warthogs in the riverbeds and open pans, and the boars often sport uniquely curved tusks. If you are lucky enough to stumble upon a big warthog boar during your time at Mahimba, or anywhere else in Africa for that matter, you should seize the opportunity without hesitation.
